Health Benefits of Calorie Restriction Diet

Anti-aging battle: Calorie restriction diet

Calorie restriction diet

Many researchers claim that if you want to live longer and look younger or slow and reverse aging process, you should start with healthy diet.
There is a lot of diets popular these days, like Paleo Diet, Atkins Diet, Gluten Free Diet, Mediterranean Diet, The Military Diet etc.
But which one makes you look younger, and has numeros health benefits?

What diet has best results in slowing down aging? Answer is calorie restriction diet.

Luigi Cornaro (15th-century Venetian nobleman) was first person who discovered all health benefits of calorie restriction. He started with calorie restricted diet at age 35 and he went on to live to be 102 years old. Calorie restriction concept diet is based on studies that go as far back as the 1930s and prove that maintaining a limited calorie diet can slow all the signs of aging.

Calorie restriction diet is proven to extend healthy, average, and maximum life span in many species. Researchers believe that the evidence to date shows the practice of calorie restriction diet will in fact extend the healthy human life span and maybe a difference could be 5-10 years of life.
Children, adolescents, and young adults (under the age of about 21), pregnant women and women trying to become pregnant are advised not to practice calorie restriction.

Research perspective
Will calorie restriction work in humans?
Edda Cava and Luigi Fontana –
„Calorie Restriction (CR) without malnutrition slows aging and increases average and maximal lifespan in simple model organisms and rodents. In rhesus monkeys long-term CR reduces the incidence of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancer, and protects against age-associated sarcopenia and neurodegeneration. However, so far CR significantly increased average lifespan only in the Wisconsin, but not in the NIA monkey study. Differences in diet composition and study design between the 2 on-going trials may explain the discrepancies in survival and disease. Nevertheless, many of the metabolic and hormonal adaptations that are typical of the long-lived CR rodents did not occur in either the NIA or WNPRC CR monkeys. Whether or not CR will extend lifespan in humans is not yet known, but accumulating data indicate that moderate CR with adequate nutrition has a powerful protective effect against obesity, type 2 diabetes, inflammation, hypertension, cardiovascular disease and reduces metabolic risk factors associated with cancer. Moreover, CR in human beings improves markers of cardiovascular aging, and rejuvenates the skeletal muscle transcriptional profile. More studies are needed to understand the interactions between CR, diet composition, exercise, and other environmental and psychological factors on metabolic and molecular pathways that regulate health and longevity.“
„Calorie Restriction without malnutrition is the most powerful nutritional intervention that has consistently been shown to increase maximal and average lifespan in a variety of organisms, including yeasts, worms, flies, spiders, rotifers, fish and rodents.“

Caloric restriction delays disease onset and mortality in rhesus monkeys

„Caloric restriction (CR) without malnutrition delays aging and extends lifespan in diverse species; however, its effect on resistance to illness and mortality in primates is not clearly established. We report findings of a 20-year longitudinal adult-onset CR study in rhesus monkeys aimed at filling this critical gap in aging research. In a population of rhesus macaques maintained at the Wisconsin National Primate Research Center, moderate CR lowered the incidence of aging-related deaths. At the time point reported 50% of control fed animals survived compared with 80% survival of CR animals. Further, CR delayed the onset of age-associated pathologies. Specifically, CR reduced the incidence of diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular disease, and brain atrophy. These data demonstrate that CR slows aging in a primate species.“

Calorie restriction diet plan

A Calorie restriction diet is different for any individual. It can depend on age, activity, gender, weight, height… With right use of a calorie restriction diet you can slow the rate at which cells divide and that way slow aging process.

Healthy calorie restriction diet need at least three balanced meals daily. If eating more often you can distribute your calories among more small meals. Increase your intake of fruits and vegetables. Eat lean proteins. Be aware of your food and beverage choices.

Drink more water. Make and stick with your week diet plan. Remember that Calorie restriction diet with good and balanced nutritional meal plan is the best  method to live longer, prevent many disease and has a lot of other health benefits.
